How It Started
At the Coleford Motor Show in 2023, some of our committee learned that there used to be an RC track at Steam Mills in Cinderford. After some digging (and a lot of walking!), we found the original site — with clear signs of the old circuit still visible.
Excited by the discovery, the committee approached Cinderford Town Council to bring the site back to life. Following presentations and discussions, we are now well on the way to securing a lease for the venue. Plans have been submitted, and the Council is preparing the agreement for us to use the land. The circuit was opened in the summer of 2025, and has seen lots of action so far, but we are far from finished with this project.
The Regeneration Plan
Bringing Steam Mills back won’t happen overnight. To keep the project manageable, we’ve broken it down into four phases:

Phase One
- Clear and prepare land for the Off-Road track and container
- Lay a multi-surface Off-Road track (astro in the future)
- Install a container for rostrum/race control
- Repair the “boar proof” fencing on the eastern edge
Phase Two
- Prepare ground south of the container for an On-Road track
- Resolve any issues with the Off-Road track
- Get quotes from local tarmac companies for the On-Road surface
- Continue running Off-Road racing, with a goal of hosting regional events
Phase Three
- Update the Off-Road track for long-term use
- Begin On-Road track construction
- Seek Council approval to extend the site for a car park
Phase Four
- Complete the On-Road track
- Upgrade fencing for future security
- Maintain a gravel car park for race day use
How You Can Help
This is a big project that will take time, effort, and funding. Club members are already working hard, but we are also looking for sponsorship and support from local businesses.
If you’d like to get involved or support the venue, please get in touch with the committee.
Following a presentation and debate session, we are on our way to securing a lease for the venue at Steam Mills. At the present time (July 2023) we have submitted the plans we have for the area in question, so that the Council may draw up an appropriate lease for us, as a club, to use the land in question.

It will be a hard slog to get the area sorted and ready for racing, but we have split the project into a couple of phases to help make it easier to manage. They are as follows.
Phase One
– Initial groundworks – Strip back land earmarked for Off-Road track and container.
– Prepare area for laying a multi surface track (future may be astro) and siting container for rostrum/race control.
– Lay Off-Road track and site container.
– Restore “Boar Proof” fencing to Eastern edge of the site.
Phase Two
– Ground work preparation on the southern side of container for On-Road track.
– Deal with any issues from Off-Road track running.
– Liase with local tarmac companies to get On-Road track costs.
– Continue running of Off-Road track (aim for regional series).
Phase Three
– Complete any updates needed for Off-Road track to ensure logevity.
– Begin construction of On-Road track
– Aim to get permission from Council to extend working area to put down a carpark for race meetings.
Phase Four
– Complete On-Road track.
– Update fencing around the site for future proofing/security.
– Maintain a gravel carpark for use exclusively by site users.
As you can see, there is a lot to do, and this won’t happen overnight or indeed without funds raised by our club members. We are also looking outside of our membership for any companies who wish to come forward and sponsor the venue to help us achieve these phases. If you would like to talk more about it, then please get in touch with the committee.
